SuperSession:
Computing
for the Consumer - The Entertainment PC |
|

 |
What is an Entertainment PC (EPC)? An EPC is characterized by: a
powerful CPU >2GHz, Large system memory (512 MB), A high performance
graphics board with HDTV output, A high quality 5.1 sound card (6.1
desirable), A TV tuner (multiple tuners desirable – multiple
standards), A FM tuner (optional a satellite radio tuner), A large
(>60 GB) disc, A DVD player (writer desirable), CD R/W, A robust
operating system, A Unified User Interface with remote control,
Photo processing and organizing software, Music organizing and
ripping software, Movie organizing software (writing desirable), And
optional features like high speed internet access, EPG, transcoding.
Do you have to have all those things? Yes, anything less is just a
PC, best case a multimedia PC. The point is – to be an EPC it has to
be something special. It has to: unify the user’s entertainment
experience, concentrate and manage all media (not just some media),
be friendly, inviting, and provide a satisfying experience.

Video Compression
and Image Processing for the DVR / PVR / STB |
|
 |
Streaming media applications such as IP Set-top
Boxes and Digital Media Adapters need to support an increasing range
of video codec algorithms. This is driven by continued evolution in
compression efficiency with new standards such as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
and WMV9/VC-1 and inherent differences in requirements for different
applications. For example, two-way video such as IP videophone has a
critical need for low latency while playback-only applications are
concerned primarily with getting the maximum possible compression
including tools that introduce latency in the system. Tools like B
frames which are critical for trick-play support in PVR applications
are not viable for videophones creating differences in the codecs
used for these applications. Using flexible media processors that
support the full range of video codecs, devices like IP STBs can
support a wide range of applications including multi-cast/broadcast
video, VOD, and videophone. This presentation will provide an
overview of the different video compression standards and which
applications they are best suited for. It will also provide an
overview of compression rules of thumb for different standards and
the corresponding performance requirements for real-time
implementations.

Enabling a New
Generation of Car Multimedia and Telematics Platforms |
|
 |
Car Multimedia and Telematics platforms are the convergence point of
Digital Media, Voice Communications and Driver Assistance features.
Next generation platforms need to remain open enough to accommodate
new functions and integrate with portable devices whilst remaining
resilient to any future security threats. This presentation looks at
how ARM is enabling the development of such platforms and provides
an example of how a Silicon Partner, Fujitsu Microelectronics is
using the technology in their next generation solutions.

Media Server Strategies - Blueprint for Success |
|

 |
What Is a Media Server? Is it a Gateway? Yes, and it is THE
convergence box. It could be inside a digital entertainment box or
and Entertainment PC. There will be both standalone and integrated
systems, and they will be in competition with various other systems
trying to accomplish the same things. What Is the market for a Media
Server? It’s going to be huge and long lasting >$5 Billion by 2008,
composed of stand alone boxes, integrated added value functions.
However, there will be conflict and confusion for consumers as well
as conflict and confusion for suppliers.

Connect Consumer
Electronics Wirelessly |
|
 |
This presentation will highlight the connectivity trends in consumer
electronics products, focusing on mobile CE products such as digital
cameras, camcorders, portable media players, etc. Technological
trends, such as high-definition capture and high-definition display,
as well as high-density and low-cost memory, enable new usages and
demand high-speed, easy-to-use links between devices. In some cases,
these trends demand links that never existed before. How will those
links be served such that the mobile CE market will grow?

Silicon Solutions
for Next Generation STB Designs |
|

 |
Next generation digital STB designs must achieve the conflicting
requirements of increased functionality, reduced cost, and
accelerated time to market. Recent innovations such as
high-definition content reception and display, the rendering of
multiple simultaneous video channels, integrated PVR capabilities,
and broadband home networking connectivity require new approaches to
the design of STB solutions. This presentation will analyze STB
hardware and software subsystems in order to understand how
cost-effective solutions to next generation STB design requirements
can be achieved.
